South Downs ZigZag Challenge
I challenge you to zigzag yourself up and down the chalky crag of the South Downs until you’ve achieve a total of 1000 meters of elevation. Whilst I make a recommendation of the route and a goal of a day to complete it in, I encourage you to choose whichever path you’d like in however many days you choose as long as you hit the elevation gain.

Starting at Upper Beeding and ending at the iconic Devil’s Dyke, you crunch the chalk beneath your feet up and down in a zigzag fashion your legs feel like they are ready to fall off.
The route is designed to be reachable by public transport from Brighton. You can catch the No 2 bus from central Brighton towards Upper Beeding/Steyning in about an hour. After finishing you can return to the centre via No 77. Please double check times before setting off.

Why
Like many I enjoy a good challenge. But what is a challenge for each of us is highly personal and constrained by the realities of life be that time, money, health etc. My own combination of constraints has meant it was difficult to find a challenge that I had a degree of control over actually being able to test myself and so I devised this one.
I share this in the hope that others can be motivated to look closer to home to challenge themselves.

Every fitness challenge has some sort of trinket to remind you of the suffering (beyond the painful memories) and this one is no different. Send an email to southdownszigzag@greg-woods.tech stating that you’ve completed it and I’ll figure out the best way to get a patch to you for free. Please bear in mind that my intended audience is a local one aimed primarily at Brighton and the surrounding towns and so I probably won’t ship one to Antarctica (sorry penguins).
